Electricity Can Do Wonders

Tesla Motors was at the EVS 23 Electric Vehicle show in Anaheim this week and had a Tesla Roadster on display for all to see. The car is capable of travelling from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in approximately 4 seconds. It has a top speed governed at 202 km/hour (125mph) and could obviously go faster if the restriction were removed. The Tesla Roadster is a zero emissions vehicle and is probably the fastest production electric car on the planet. The waiting list includes many Hollywood celebrities and Internet/Computer pioneers, with approximately 560 of the cars initial production already reserved by the fall of 2007.

The Roadster can be purchased directly on-line from www.teslamotors.com with the ability to pre-reserve a uniquely determined car colour/options combination for yourself. The base price for the car is $98 000 U.S. dollars with premium options like touch screen satellite navigation ($1200) and a carbon fibre hard top ($3200) as part of a total list of 9 options. There are 12 colours available for the car with two colours red and green as standard and 5 metallic colours ($500) and 5 premium colours ($1000) as options. The interior of the car comes standard in leather, with a premium leather and premium micro fibre optional interior available as $1200 option.

The performance specifications are fantastic for this new technology. The car is constructed of bonded extruded aluminium, and has lithium ion batteries with a full charge achieved in as low as 3.5 hours, and a useful battery life of 100 000 miles (160 000 km). The car has a 245 mile combined city/highway range. AP Racing two piston disc brakes are on the front wheels whilst Brembo single piston disc brakes are on the rear. Standard tires are Yokohama Neova AD07 LTS’s.

Tesla Motors, Inc. takes its name from a Serbian inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. The company was started in the summer of 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in San Carlos, U.S.A.
