Tesla Motors' 2009 Roadster Goes Platinum
When you make a revolutionary trend-setting product like the Tesla Roadster, it appears you can sell it even in the toughest of financial times. The Tesla Roadster is one of the fastest sports car on the Planet, and it does it with zero emissions to our future. Elon Musk, Tesla Motors CEO and Product Architect, says the company has sold-out its production through to early November, and they expect to sell-out the year within a month. The Tesla Roadster is a dream come true for the U.S. automotive industry and a success story that demonstrates the financial returns possible from making planet-saving transportation technology a reality.
In December 2008, Tesla Motors closed out a key round of $40 million in financing for their strategic growth plans and the company indicates that they will hit profitability for the initial founding investors by the middle of this year. Since starting pilot production in 2008, Tesla has produced 200 Roadsters and they have 1000 additional customers who have booked deliveries of the car. Its a car that we have driven ourselves, and all we could say at the time was that the car was simply awesome to drive.
When it comes to arriving in style for the 2009 Academy Awards, only the A-list celebrities will be able to secure their ride in a Roadster due to the high demand to be seen exiting the Roadster for their publicity photo. Such is the image demand for the car today, that at a recent auction of a used Tesla Roadster at the Sonoma Paradiso in California, it was sold for $160,000, or $51,000 more than the list price of a new 2009 model (list price: $109,000).
Our camera crew caught this picture of an orange Tesla Roadster at the Paris Auto Show in October 2008, and all we could say at the time was what a cool colour they had chosen for the car. We'll try and join a race track session of the Roadster when one becomes available, because we can't wait to test the Brembo four-wheel disc brakes on a high-g braking entrance to a hairpin corner.
Tesla announced that they are now taking orders for the Roadster Sport, which will have a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 3.7 seconds, have adjustable suspension settings, Yokohama ultra high performance tires, and a custom hand wound electric sports engine. The other great news is that on March 26, 2009, Tesla Motors will launch their new Model 'S' prototype luxury sedan to the public at a VIP / Current Tesla Owners special invite event. The Obama administration is fully behind electric cars, and this is good news for Tesla Motors, because when you get honest appreciation it inspires you to deliver even more exceptional results. The new Model 'S' is epected to go on sale in early 2011.
In yet another positive development, Tesla Motors say that they have been awarded a partnership contract with Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz Cars) to produce the battery packs and chargers for the new smart fortwo electric car. The Department Of Energy has recently announced that they will give Tesla Motors a $350 million loan guarantee within a few weeks in order to aid in the production development for the new Model 'S' sedan.
