2009 Tesla Roadster

For some, the ability to drive an electric zero emissions supercar has already begun with the Tesla Roadster, which is manufactured by Tesla Motors of San Carlos, California in the United States. The Tesla Roadster delivers instantaneous acceleration and incredible torque with an electric motor that starts at 0 and continues all the way up to the 13000 rpm limit. The Tesla Roadster performance specifications are 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4 seconds, and a top speed of 125 mph (200 km/h). The Roadster's 2009 MY base price in the United States is $109,000 without options.

For European customers Tesla Motors has prepared a 2009 Signature Edition Tesla Roadster and has allocated 250 of these to Europe for 2009. The European 2009 Signature Edition of the Tesla Roadster sells for 99,000 Euros and this price includes all the available options as part of the 'Signature' package cost.

Tesla Motors recently began their first commercial deliveries of the Roadster to customers, with production starting at their San Carlos, California facility on March 17, 2008. To present the car to a European audience, Tesla brought production #04 (see photo) of the Tesla Roadster to the Top Marques Motor Show, held in the Principality of Monaco (April 24-27, 2008). The car they displayed was part of the Founders' Series of the Roadster, and was created for those who were either the initial investors in Tesla Motors, or the first early purchasers of the car. Even Bono from U2 dropped in at the Top Marques Tesla exhibit to check out the zero emissions Roadster. Tesla Roadsters numbered 6 and 7 will be delivered to the two co-founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin and the first year's production of the Roadster will be 600 cars.

The Tesla Roadster has had significant engineering involvement from Lotus Cars in its development and production, and had its initial body concepts derived from the Lotus Elise. The car today, however, has become a completely unique design. The body is manufactured by Lotus in England, including its final assembly. Outer body panels are made of carbon fibre and the chassis is constructed from extruded aluminium sections that are bonded together to form the structure.

The Roadster is powered from lithium ion battery cells. Tesla Motors configures the battery pack using their own proprietary technology, which gives the Telsa Roadster a range of 220 miles (352 km) and an ability to be fully charged overnight. The Tesla Roadster comes equipped with regenerative braking that charges the batteries during deceleration.
