Tour De France Bike - Specialized S-Works TARMAC SL2
The Specialized TARMAC SL2 was a very competitive cycle at this year's 2008 Tour De France and was the racing bike that supported the victor of the 'King Of The Mountains' competition during the mountains stage of the Tour. Unfortunately, the 2008 'King Of The Mountains' winner, Bernhard Kohl from Austria, has been part of the Cera blood booster EPO doping scandal, but the cycle lives on as the equipment that delivered the result. The Specialized S-Works TARMAC SL2 has an overall weight of 6.85 kg (15.1 lbs) and the frame, forks and rims are made from carbon fiber (fibre).
At the 2008 Cycle Show in Earls Court in London, United Kingdom this month (Ocober 9, 2008), we had an opportunity to photograph the new 2009 Specialized S-Works TARMAC SL2 and also the sister bike, the 2009 S-Works ROUBAIX SL2, which is suited for long distance triathlons and has vibration isololators front and rear. One of the unique elements that the Specialized S-Works group can deliver on their cycles is custom engineering. The new 2009 TARMAC SL2 has an S-Works professional FACT carbon 11r frame. The headset on the frame is an S-Works Campy style, with a unique outer geometry and is threadless, with sealed cartridge ceramic (light) bearings on stainless steel races, and two carbon spacers. The front forks are S-Works Fact carbon with monocoque construction. The stem is also S-Works Pro-Set and uses a titanium bolts with a carbon/alloy faceplate and a top carbon cap.
The TARMAC SL2 has Specialized's own S-Works handlebars which are called S-Works SL FACT carbon and 31.8 mm. The handlebar tape is Body Geometry Bar Phat - cork ribbon / neoprene padding. The front derailleur, rear derailleur and shift levers are New Shimano Dura-Ace. For braking, Specialized S-Works has also used the New Dura-Ace series for the front and rear brakes and the brake levers. The crankset, chain and cassette (11-28t) are also by Shimano and the New Dura-Ace series.
For the wheelset, the S-Works division has specified Zipp 404 carbon clincher rims and Zipp 404 hubs front and rear with stainless spokes. The tires and tubes are also Specialized's own brand and are S-Works Mondo Open Tubular's (700x23c 290 TPI w/Aramid bead) with Specialized Turbo presta tubes. The seat is a Body Geometry Toupe, with carbon reinforced titanium rails. The seatpost is S-Works SL FACT carbon (27.2mm) and the seat binder is S-Works CNC alloy (32.6 mm).
