smart fortwo electric car - 2010 Production Model
HAMBACH, FRANCE - smart cars announced today that their Hambach, France production facility will start producing the smart fortwo electric car (ED model) starting in November 2009. The initial cars are destined for city trials throughout the world where they will undergo performance testing in programs like the e-Mobility Berlin electric car fleet in Berlin, Germany, and also cities like Austin, Texas as part of a similar rental city fleet program installed in the United States.
smart cars says that the first customers of electric smart fortwo's will be lease customers, but that the 2012 smart electric car model will be sold worldwide to the general public without sales restrictions. This smart fortwo electric car is very quick vehicle with a 0 to 60 km/h (37.5 mph) acceleration time of 6.5 seconds. The top speed of the smart electric is governed to a maximum of 100 km/h or 62.5 mph. theirEarth took this photo of the smart electric drive car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show last March.
The 2010 smart fortwo electric car has a range of 115 kms (71.9 miles) off of a full charge, and can be fully charged from a household outlet for about 2 euros or $2.80 (US dollars). The new second-generation 14 kWh lithium-ion battery pack installed on the 2010 smart electric car is designed and manufactured by Tesla Motors of San Carlos, California. The smart ED's electric drive motor is installed in the rear under floor parcel tray behind the passenger compartment and in the same location as the petrol (gasoline) engine model. The electric motor has a power output of 30 kW and delivers 120 Newton metres of maximum torque, giving brisk acceleration to the vehicle from a standing start.
smart cars says their electric car achieves a full charge overnight off of a 240 V household outlet, and that drivers in hot climates will be able to pre-cool their smart electric car's air conditioning off of their household electrical outlet before they leave the driveway. Additionally, the 2010 smart fortwo electric car comes with the 'Passion' equipment option pack, which includes air conditioning, automatic climate control, and a battery/ammeter charging gauge that shows the battery's charging/discharging performance for the ED model.
Starting in November 2009, smart cars will lease the new smart fortwo electric cars to program customers for a period of four years or 60,000 kms (37,500 miles). The cities that are slated to take part in the smart electric car lease program are Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, Rome, Milan, Pisa, Madrid, and yet to be announced U.S. cities.
smart cars says there is already significant global customer interest directed towards the purchase of a smart electric fortwo car. For the 2012 model year smart will offer their 'ED' electric car to the general public, and start producing it in high volumes to meet the anticipated significant worldwide demand.
