New Renault Symbol Achieves 74.7 US MPG - 3.15 L/100 km
Renault held an Eco-Challenge in the country of Turkey at the beginning of September and used the new Renault Symbol 1.5 dCi 85 hp diesel car to test fuel efficient driving techniques. The Eco-Challenge started in Istanbul, Turkey and covered a 1430 km (893.8 mile) return trip over a period of two days. The Renault Eco-Challenge team covered the return journey with a fuel efficiency consumption rate of 3.15 litres/100km (74.7 MPG U.S.), versus the standard 4.3 litres/100km for the car's published combined fuel consumption rating. This 30% imporvement was mostly due to the fuel efficient driving techniques.
The Eco-Challenge was a two day Renault sponsored event using three identically prepared Renault Symbol cars. The event started in Istanbul and had an overnight stay in the Turkish resort of Cesme. The next day, the Eco-Challege team moved through Bursa and Izmir and finally returned back to Istanbul to complete the fuel economy test.
Renault had trained the Eco-Challenge drivers in fuel efficient driving techniques, like implementing gear shifts up and down at low rpms, the smooth application of acceleration, driving up hills with concentration on minimal power application, and for descents applying zero power to save fuel. Additionally, when the cars were stopped for significant periods of time, the engines were shut down to save fuel and reduce emissions when it was safe to do so.
