Paris, France - Velib Bicycle Rental A Hit In The City

PARIS, FRANCE - Once you become a member of Velib in the city of Paris, France, you can rent any one of the over 20,000 Velib rental bicycles available from 1451 Velib Stations distributed throughout the city. You can rent a Velib cycle and then drop it off as a return to any other Paris Velib cycle station, and the best news is that the first 30 minutes is always free. Residents of Paris and visitors to the city can sign up for an annual 1 year Velib membership through the Internet [www.en.velib.paris.fr], or by buying a  short-term 1 or 7-day Velib ticket through the web site, or at any Velib rental station, using their credit card.

The annual membership is 29 Euros and requires that you send in validity documents to register. Your annual membership is then mailed to you in 15 days. Alternatively, a short-term 1-day Velib pass costs 1 Euro and a 7-day pass is 5 Euros. An additional 150 Euro deposit is required on a short-term pass, which is taken off your credit card and credited to your card at the completion of your rental duration period.

Renting a Velib bicycle is reasonable with the rental tariff for short term rentals (1-day and 7-day Velib tickets) providing the first 30 minutes free, and thereafter the next half hour is 1 Euro, the next half hour an additional 2 Euros, and thereafter 4 Euros per each additional half hour. From the Velib rental tariff schedule, one can see that the city of Paris is promoting the use of the Velib rental cycles for short duration trips from one Paris destination to another. More information about Velib is also available by using the telephone contact: +33 (0) 130 79 79 30 (residents from the U.S. and Canada will have to dial 011 first and the 33 without the zero).

Velib says that in Paris there are usually stations available within 300 metres of each other, and if you find that one station is full, you just swipe your card at it and you are given an additional 15 minutes free of charge to find the next available return station. Accepted payment methods are Visa, Visa Electron, Mastercard, Mastercard Maestro, American Express, JCB, and Moneo cards. Renters must be at least 14 years of age and be over 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) to rent one of the Paris Velib cycles.
