Monaco and Riviera Marathon Winners - 2009
FONTVIELLE, MONACO - The 2009 running of the Monaco and Riviera Marathon took place today within the countries of France and Italy and the Principality Of Monaco. The race started at the Port in Monaco and worked its way through France's Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Menton, and then onto Italy's Vintimille where at the 22 km mark it turned back towards Monaco to finish at the Stade Louis II on the internal stadium running track. The total race distance of the Monaco and Rivera Marathon was 42.195 km. There was also a shorter 10 K race run within the Principality.
At the Stade Louis II in Fontvielle, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco awarded the trophy to the winner of the Marathon and to the top finishing woman marathon runner as well. The three fastest Monaco Marathon runners came from the countries of Kenya and Russia. First place went to Kenya's Ben Mutai Kimwole (centre) who broke the record for the Monaco Marathon (2:11:26) with an excellent world-class time of 2 hours 11 minutes and 1 second (2:11:01). Kimwole's first was followed by the second place finish of fellow countryman Jackson Rono of Kenya (left), who crossed th finish line (2:17:50) and third went to Andrei Bryzgalov of Russia (2:18:03), shown standing on the right.
The top place finishing woman for the Monaco Riviera Marathon was Belaynesh Bekele of Ethiopia (2:48:48), and in second was Ekaterina Fateeva of Russia (2:51:29), with third place going to Elena Kozhevnikova, also from Russia. In the Monaco Riviera 10 K Race, held in the same period as the Marathon, first place was taken by Peter Gross (00:31:21), second Henry Gross (00:31:30), and third Adli Kais (00:32.04).
