Mitsubishi i MiEV SPORT ELECTRIC
Mitsubishi introduced their 'i MiEV Electric SPORT' to the centre stage of the Tokyo Motor Show yesterday as a concept car for future production. The i MiEV SPORT has in-wheel 4WD with three electric motors - one at each front wheel and a single motor to drive the rear wheels. Osamu Masuko, President of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation delivered the address to the audience and said that their original intention was to launch the vehicle as production for the 2010 model year, but that this will now have to be accelerated to meet the expected demand.
The Mitsubishi i MiEV SPORT has an excellent exterior design and should be a huge success for Mitsubishi in the electric commuter category, expected to have a huge global demand in the next few years. Key for all manufacturers of Full Electrics will be the development of the recyclability of all vehicle parts with clear material labelling, use of plastics capable of recycling, agreeing on a JIS Standard for plastic colours, and designing in disassembly of the vehicle. The most important area for the ecology will be the design of the battery casings and internal component configurations for recycling, tear down, and re-use and standardizing battery configurations amongst vehicle manufacturers.
Development of the engineering of the i MiEV electric vehicles has been under the technical expertise of Kazunori Handa and Hiroaki Yoshida of Mitsubishi Motors, and they have identified already the need to improve the infrastructure for electric vehicles, but this is something that should be easily overcome if all global EV manufacturers develop joint battery standards through ISO. This is one of the futures for automotive transport, so it is excellent to see that Mitsubishi Motors is driving down the correct road.
