Mitsubishi Displays Its Revolutionary 'i MiEV' Electric Car In Geneva
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - Mitsubishi Motors displayed its i MiEV electric car at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland earlier this month. The i MiEV is an electric car that produces zero emissions and Mitsubishi says it "will revolutionize the way you think about cars". The i MiEV looks very close to becoming a production car, and Mitsubishi says that it will be offered to all international markets.
The Mitsubishi i MiEV seats 4 adults and has a driving range of 160 km (100 miles). It is powered by a lithium ion battery pack that has a total output voltage of 330 volts. Charging the i MiEV's battery is by two methods - overnight off a household outlet charger, or to 80% charge in 30 minutes off a high amperage quick charger. Mitsubishi claims full charging times off a household outlet are are 7 hours at 200V (15A), and 14 hours at 100V (15A).
The top speed on the Mitsuibishi i MiEV electric car is a respectable 130 km/h (81.3 mph) and the total weight of the car is 1,080 kgs. The electric drive motor in the i MiEV is a permanent magnet synchronous type and designed and manufactured by Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi will start selling the right-hand drive i MiEV in Japan at the end of this year (2009) and a limited number of i MiEV's may go on sale in the United Kingdom in late 2009 - early 2010. We expect the left-hand drive version of the i MiEV to start sales (release date) in Europe and North America by late 2010.
