Mercedes-Benz's New Folding Bicycle

STUTTGART, GERMANY - Mercedes-Benz, known for its high quality automobiles, is also manufacturing new high-end bicycles for the cycle market. We had a chance to photograph Mercedes-Benz's new Folding Bike and review its technical specifications. The Mercedes-Benz Folding Bicycle is fitted with high quality components and includes disc brakes (front and rear), with the frame fabricated of 7500 aluminium.

Mercedes-Benz has designed their Folding Bike to fold compact in seconds and the bicycle also comes with a carrying sac to protect it during transport. The disc brakes on the folding bike are manufactured by Topeak exclusively for Mercedes-Benz, and the brake levers are by Avid. One of the very unique design features is that the bike has a swing-arm suspension that includes a shock absorber made by Kindshock. The front forks are also fabricated by Kindshock. The rims and hubs have been designed by Mercedes-Benz engineering.

Mercedes-Benz has specified Continental Tour Ride tires on the Folding Bike, and these are 16 inches in diameter (front and rear - 16 x 1.75"). The Mercedes-Benz Folding Bike has 8 speeds provided by a Shimano SORA rear derailleur, including a Shimano HG-50 gear cassette. The shifter mechanism is also by Shimano and is the SL-R440 model. The overall weight of the Mercedes-Benz Folding bike is a light 13.5 kg (29.7 lbs), and it is deisigned to carry a payload (rider and baggage) of up to 120 kg (264 lbs). A rear carrier is also standard on the bike and made by Topeak.

The Mercedes-Benz Folding Bike is available in two colour combinations - silver and black (shown), and white and black. The cycle will fit riders of all sizes as the frame and seat have universal adjustment capability built-in. In France, Mercedes-Benz sells the Folding Bike at 1758 Euros (including taxes). The bicycle is ideal for those that need to travel and carry their extra mobility with them. For the yachting crowd it is probably the must-have cycle as the owners navigate the pier, and the Folding Bike has also been seen in Formula 1's pit lane. The Mercedes-Benz Folding Bike is available at many worldwide Mercedes-Benz dealers.
