Mamma Mia Musical At Le Palais Des Congres - Paris, France
The magic of ABBA's music comes alive in the musical Mamma Mia, whose International Tour comes to Paris at Le Palais des Congres (July 2-13, 2008) after completing seven spectacular shows in Monte-Carlo Monaco at the Grimaldi Forum at the end of June. Tickets are available for the Paris performance by direct on-line purchase at the Mamma Mia web site, or by telephoning (see details below). The Mamma Mia Musical is fantastic, the choreography spectacular, and the assembled energy by all the performers that comes together in one moment for numbers like "Mamma Mia" can only be appreciated in person. Nick Grace, the producer of the International Tour, says "Mamma Mia has performed in 25 countries and has been around the world two and a half times." After Paris, the show moves to Gothenburg, Sweden (Scandinavium); Stockholm, Sweden (Globen); Turku, Finland (Turkuhalli); Helsinki, Finland (Hartwall Areena) and Istanbul, Turkey (Gosteri Merkezi).
Its appropriate to say "Thank You For The Music" to Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson for their integral role in the Mamma Mia show. The two are both friends and founders of ABBA, one of the worlds most successful musical bands. On April 6, 1974 in the town of Brighton, U.K. ABBA's four very talented performers Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad brought enduring music to the world when they won the Eurovision Song Contest for their song titled WATERLOO.
ABBA chose their band name using the first letter of each of their first names assembled together (ABBA: Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, Anni-Frid). The measure of their popularity is that ABBA has sold more than 350 million records worldwide to date, and the message that they send in their compilation of music and words creates an audience that spans the ages and now is the key element of the Mamma Mia Musical.
Mamma Mia is a box office international success story that first opened on April 6, 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London's West End. It first came to the U.S. in November 2000, opening at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco. Its Broadway premiere was in October 2001 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York. The London production of Mamma Mia moved to the newly renovated Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004 and continues to sell-out there today.
Mamma Mia has been seen by over 30 million people worldwide, grossed over $2 Billion at the box office, and opened in 170 major cities within a period of just eight years. Its incredible that all of this is from the dream of one woman, Judy Craymer, Mamma Mia's Creative Producer, who convinced the founders of ABBA (Ulvaeus and Andersson) to come along with her on the journey in 1995. Judy Craymer was able to enlist the creative ability of Catherine Johnson to write the musical Mamma Mia in January of 1997 and later that year Phyllida Lloyd came aboard as the show's Director.
Catherine Johnson has also written the screenplay for the Mamma Mia! motion picture, that will be released to theatres in July 2008 and is produced by partners Universal Pictures, Playtone and Littlestar. Mamma Mia! The Movie stars Oscar winner Meryl Streep, and Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, and Amanda Seyfried.
Using Catherine Johnson's own words, she says the following about the story line of Mamma Mia "There's a mother-daughter relationship; an old romance, there's losing someone and finding them again. There are all kinds of things that everyone can relate to." The International Tour of Mamma Mia is the mobile version of the production and will perform within major cities throughout the world this year where there isn't a permanently established production.
ABBA's music is integral to the Mamma Mia Musical and show goers will hear famous ABBA hits like Dancing Queen, Gimme Gimme, Thank You For The Music, Chiquitita, Knowing Me Knowing You, Take A Chance On Me, and The Winner Takes It All to name a few. In total, 22 ABBA songs make up the musical element of the Mamma Mia show.
The cast of the International Tour has Haley Flaherty playing the future bride Sophie Sheridan, and Jon Hawkins as Sky, the future husband. Carolanne Weidle plays Donna Sheridan, Sophie's mother, and Lindsey Tierney and Kellie Ryan play Sophie's friends Ali and Lisa. In the roles of friends of Sophie's mother are Anita Booth and Felicity Duncan who play Tanya and Rosie. Sky's friends Pepper and Eddie are played by Ahmet Ahmet and Ian Gareth-Jones respectively. Finally, the three possible fathers are played by Richard Shelton, Damian Myerscough and Cameron Blakely as Harry Bright, Bill Austin, and Sam Carmichael.
