Jerry Lewis To Be Given Hersholt Humanitarian Award At The Oscars

The 2009 81st Academy Awards (Oscars) will air on Sunday February 22, 2009, and will be shown live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California in the United States. The Awards will be broadcast live on the ABC Television Network in the U.S., and also be shown around the world on the top international TV networks. It was recently announced by Academy President, Sid Ganis, that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has decided that actor, director, producer Jerry Lewis will be presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at February's 81st Academy Awards.

Jerry Lewis has always been a brilliant comedian and has brought his gift of laughter creation to over a billion people since his start in the 1940's with his comedy partner Dean Martin. But his efforts to support the quest for a cure and also the care of those afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy has exceeded his comedic efforts many times over. Jerry has used his on-screen popularity to establish massive popular support for the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) using telethons, print campaigns, and other charity events. Lewis has held the position of national chairman of the MDA since 1952, or for an incredible fifty-six (56) years.

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis first appeared on the big screen in the film "My Friend Irma" (1949), and went on to star together in sixteen films produced between 1949-1956 by Paramount Pictures. Jerry also established a very successful film career of his own and starred in the Hollywood hits such as: "The Bellboy" (1960), "The Ladies Man" (1961), "The Nutty Proffesor" (1963), "The Disorderly Orderly" (1964), "The Family Jewels" (1965), and the "King Of Comedy" (1983) - all of which were full of his trademark slapstick comedy. Additionally, Jerry has been an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California (USC) where he gave lectures over the years on film making.

This year's 81st Academy Awards will be hosted by actor Hugh Jackman who will take centre stage to lead the Awards. The official nominations for the 81st Academy Awards will be announced on January 22, 2008 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.
