BMW Drives Efficiency Into The 3-Series
At the Paris Auto Show (2008 Paris Mondial De L'Automobile) on October 2, 2008, BMW had the 2009 320d Coupe on display that carries the latest in their EfficientDynamics engineering. BMW has managed to extract both power, efficiency and low CO2 output from the 320d's high precision diesel injection motor.
The new 320d Coupe uses BMW's 3rd generation Common Rail 4-cylinder diesel engine that is rated at 130 kW (177 hp) and accelerates the Coupe at an impressive zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 7.9 seconds. The engine's maximum torque is 350 Nm and this is achieved in the power band of 1750-3000 rpm. To save energy, the new Coupe also has an Auto Start-Stop capability that shuts the engine down during idling periods (like when stationary at traffic lights) and re-starts the motor when the brake is released. Additionally, to reduce accesory drag on the engine the new 320d Coupe has electric steering that is run off the battery. To power the additional electric demands, BMW has installed an uprated battery and regenerative braking that charges the battery during deceleration.
For BMW, their EfficientDynamics branding means breaking the barriers of engineering for efficiency, while still providing acceleration and overall driving pleasure. The 2009 BMW 320d Coupe gets an incredible 4.8 L/100 km (49 US MPG / 58.9 Imp MPG) on the mixed EU cycle test and for quite a powerful vehicle, emits a respectable 128 g CO2/km. On the motorway (highway), the BMW 2009 320d EfficientDynamics Coupe can ahieve as much as 4.1 L/100 km (57.4 US MPG / 68.9 Imp MPG) if driven carefully.
To improve vehicle efficiency, BMW has also installed low rolling resistance tires, an optimum shift indicator, a diesel particulate filter that meets EU5 emissions requirements, and reduced overall vehicle weight by concentrating on light construction. Although not very efficient in this mode, the top speed of the EfficientDynamics BMW 320d Coupe is 232 km/h (145 mph). BMW has done an excellent job of raising the efficiency of the 3-series Coupe substantially while also keeping the performance.
