Mercedes-Benz Creates The A-Class Electric

STUTTGART, GERMANY - Mercedes-Benz recently started series production of 500 examples of the 2011 A-Class E-CELL electric car at their Rastatt production facility in Germany. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-CELL will be marketed in Germany, France and the Netherlands as a lease vehicle and offered to selected customers. The A-Class electric car has a market leading maximum driving range of 200 km (124.3 miles) using its fully charged lithium-ion battery packs. With a modular approach to engineering design, Mercedes-Benz has been able to bring the A-Class electric car to market quickly by using proven powertrain technology from both their B-Class F-CELL Fuel Cell car and their smart electric drive.

Mercedes-Benz has configured the new A-Class E-CELL using two lithium-ion battery packs from their electric drive smart car, and it uses the same electric drive powertrain as found on the B-Class F-CELL car. If you can remember, We took the B-Class F-CELL and the smart electric drive on extensive road tests in late 2009 and were impressed with the driving dynamics of the two car platforms, so the same performance should apply to the A-Class. Mercedes-Benz says that the A-Class E-CELL can accelerate from zero to 60 km/h (0 - 37.3 mph) in 5.5 seconds using the performance of its 70 kW (95 hp) peak output, 50 kW (68 hp) permanent field synchronous electric motor.

Inside the new A-Class E-CELL, Mercedes-Benz says there is no compromise on space as the car carries the same interior dimensions as a standard petrol (gasoline) powered A-Class. Mercedes-Benz has positioned the two lithium-ion battery packs under the passenger compartment beneath the sandwich floor structure. The new A-Class electric drive can be charged for a range of 100 km in eight hours off of a standard wall outlet or in 3 hours off of a commercial quick charger. The interior of the A-Class E-CELL is the premium "AVANTGARDE" equipment range and there are bi-xenon headlights on the outside and a Thermotronic automatic climate control system. The exterior of the A-Class E-CELL model is painted in polar silver colour.
