Magnificent Yachts At The Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show opened yesterday at the Port in Monaco with over 500 exhibitors and close to 100 large sailing and motor yachts. The Monaco Yacht Show is a display of the finest in luxury craftsmanship and services for the yachting industry. One of the large super sailing yachts on display was a Wally 80, called 'Highland Fling X' (see photo), and built by Wally Yachts. The Wally 80 is a design by Farr Yacht Design in cooperation with Wally Yachts, and the styling and interior is by Wally and Lazzarini Pickering Architects.

The 'Highland Fling X' (Wally 80) is a fast cruising sloop with an overall length of 23.99 metres (78 ft 8in) long. The owners stateroom has a king size bed and en-suite head and separate shower. There are also two guest cabins, with two beds each and en-suite head and shower, and also a crew cabin with two beds and en-suite head and shower. The Wally 80's hull is constructed of advanced composite, and the deck finish is teak. The 'Highland Fling X' was constructed at Wally Europe's shipyard in Italy.

The Super Yacht industry, much like in Formula 1, brings some of the highest technology, and highest skilled engineers and craftsman together to construct very unique masterpieces. More and more, the industry is incorporating sustainable development technology into the boats and this is very apparent in recent advances like electricity generating photo voltaic solar cells sewn into the sails of sailing yachts as seen in the Mercedes-Benz sponsored Pangaea sailing yacht, that is on a 4 year sustainability project touring the Planet. Other 'green' areas in yachting are onboard state of the art water treatment and pollution control equipment, like that demonstrated by Hamann AG at the Monaco Yacht Show.

We toured Vitters Shipyard 51.7 metre (169 ft 7 in) 'nirvana' sailing yacht at the Monaco Yacht Show. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco will award Vitters Shipyard the 2008 Nymphenburg-Monaco Yacht Show "Prix Du Design" for their excellent craftsmanship and design in the 'nirvana' sailing yacht. Vitters is a custom yacht builder whose shipyard is in the Netherlands and they opened in 1990. The 'nirvana' was designed by Dubois Naval Architects.

The 'nirvana' is appointed with the finest craftmanship money can buy. Its design outside and inside blends wood with quality interior design like nothing seen before. There is even a sauna attached to the owners stateroom with a vast stand-up shower surrounded by frosted glass and this is integrated with the overall stateroom design. The carbon fibre composite mast is actually incorporated into the visual design of the stateroom. The nirvana's hull has been constructed entirely of aluminium, which is also a very sustainable and recyclable material to use.

The Monaco Yacht Show runs from September 24-27 in the Principality of Monaco.
