2008 German Grand Prix Results - Hockenheim

Lewis Hamilton scored his second consecutive win last Sunday at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim, Germany. Hamilton put his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 car across the finish line 5.5 seconds ahead of Nelson Piquet, who was second in the Renault, followed by Felipe Massa, third in the Ferrari. Lewis raised his championship points total to 58, ahead of Ferrari Drivers Felipe Massa (54 points) and Kimi Raikkonen (51 points).

Lewis held pole position from the qualifying session on Saturday, and at the start of the race he pulled ahead of the field. By Lap 1, Hamilton was 1.8 seconds ahead of Felipe Massa (Ferrari), followed by Heikki Kovalainen (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes). Lewis continued to increase his lead over Massa and by Lap 10 he was 7.0 seconds ahead. Lewis took his first pit stop on Lap 18, and Massa took his on Lap 20, with Kovalainen coming in on Lap 21. By Lap 29, with the first round of pits completed, the race order was Hamilton - first, Massa - second, and Kovalainen - third.

On Lap 37, Timo Glock, driving the Toyota, had an accident on the front straight, which caused the Safety Car to be deployed and during this period Kovalainen came in for his second pit stop, and Hamilton stayed out on the track keeping his leadership position. The race was re-started on Lap 42, and Lewis was in first followed by Nick Heidfeld in the BMW Sauber. Hamilton came in for his second pit on Lap 50 (6.6 seconds) and rejoined the race in fifth behind his team mate Heikki. Lewis overtook Heikki on Lap 52 to take fourth place, with a 3.9 second gap between his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and Felipe Massa's Ferrari in front of him.

By Lap 57, it was Nelson Piquet who was leading the race, and on this lap, Hamilton outbraked Massa at the hairpin to take the second place position. Lewis immediately began to attack the distance between his car and Piquet's and again at the hairpin on Lap 60, he outbraked Piquet to take the lead.

On Lap 67, Hamilton crossed the finish line with a 5.5 second lead over Piquet to take his eighth Formula 1 career victory.

Lewis had the following to say about his win: " We had the pace in the car to keep pushing and want to say a big thank-you to Heikki, who realised I was quicker. I was able to slipstream past Felipe and then thought my work was done; then I had to do it all again to get past Nelson. But I made a couple of textbook moves to get past them both...We couldn't have asked for more today."
